Ragdolls appeared for the first time in the 60’s in Riverside, California. The person who discovered this breed and the first owner of these cats was Ann Baker. The line’s history is also quite mysterious. Nobody knows exactly - even today - the real origins of this breed. The most credible and plausible story is probably the story of Josephine - a cat living in the neighbourhood of Ann Baker’s neighbour - Mrs. Pennels. Josephine was an ordinary feline, white, with medium length hair. It is told that one day Josephine was hit by a passing car and severely wounded. Ann Baker - with the help of her neighbours who worked at the local university - decided to take care of the injured cat. Due to her attentive care, the half-feral cat changed beyond recognition. She became trusty and friendly towards humans with each coming day. After recovery, she gave birth to a unique line of offspring, totally different from the previous. These kittens gained the attention of Ann Baker. They exhibited a unique trait: they would go limp when taken into human hands, whilst giving the impression of a rag doll (hence their name). Legend has it, that Josephine was treated with geotaxis agents, and even today geneticists are quite restrained with the statements upon the subject. There are also many myths - such as lack of ‘instinct’ among these cats, or abnormal resistance to pain - but they are just false. Of course, ragdolls - like all cats - are calm and gentle, but then also know how to fight for their rights and of course suffer pain.
"People who do not like cats apparently have not met the right one."
